India's holiest river, 'The Ganga' has sustained and nourished hundreds of millions of people's lives and livelihoods through the centuries. But today, the river is facing a slow death. Over most of its length, the Ganga is dangerously polluted. Unplanned urban and industrial growth have led to the river system's abuse, turning it into a toxic stream at several points during its journey to the sea. The Indian government has launched a massive 'Clean Ganga' project to try and restore the river to its pristine condition.
